Over the weekend I indulged in a bit of shopping and picked up these two fossilized ammonites from Michael Goettsch of Artifacts of Time. On the left is an opalized ammonite from Morocco; the photo doesn’t do justice to the depth of the coloration it has. Its companion on the right is a pyritized ammonite from the Ural Mountains, a lesser-seen sort of fossil. Both of these were formed when their respective minerals trickled into the decaying shell of the deceased ammonite and replaced its molecules.
that one on the right is amazing! love it!
